Brazilian mining giant Vale would help fund New Century Resources to take over and improve its troubled New Caledonia nickel mine, under the terms of a proposed deal being negotiated between the companies.New Century said it had secured a 60-day exclusivity period to negotiate a deal for 95 per cent of Vale's Goro nickel and cobalt mine, New Century boss Patrick Walta said the deal would be a ''negative consideration transaction" but was unable to elaborate further on the exact terms.The comments suggest debts attached to the mine will be forgiven and there may also be a cash injection from Vale to ensure New Century is successful in turning around the mine's performance.If successfully negotiated, that structure would make the Goro deal similar to ''In terms of the parallels between Century and Goro, they are almost the same deal, except Goro is the Century deal on steroids,'' said Mr Walta.Vale last year absorbed $US250 million ($382 million) of debts linked to the project that were held by the provincial governments in New Caledonia that collectively owned 5 per cent of the mine.Mr Walta said New Century would not be taking on any debt as part of the deal.The New Caledonia assets have been unreliable and troublesome for Vale since they were developed a decade ago at a cost of close to $US9 billion, with the Brazilian company taking a $US2.51 billion impairment on them last year "due to the reduction in expected production levels of refined nickel''.Vale gave the assets a carrying value of $US404 million at December 31, suggesting further impairments could be followed if the sale to New Century is for a "negative consideration".Vale has over the past year started a program to reduce the complexity of the processing plant at Goro to improve the mine's performance and Mr Walta said the Brazilian giant was determined to leave a positive legacy in New Caledonia.
