One last note, The Alltrails route shows this hike starting at the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead, but you can easily drive another 1.25 miles down the dirt road to get to the Ding and Dang trailhead.Water pockets in about 4 areas within the first 1/4 mile or so of the canyon in the slot areas. Possible with out if you have technical climbing skills. We parked at the first lot, if I would have used my brain I could have shaved 2 miles off this hike. According to our records, she has no children. •At the time we hiked this there were at least 4 locations where ropes were helpful and at least 2 of these we did not see a work around. I did the route counterclockwise starting with Ding Canyon and ending through Dang. Gets really hot when you’re not in the shade.Great hike but for experienced hikers. Ding Dang’s Boyfriend. Most water is knee to waist deep as of 5/23.This was an amazing trail but people with their dogs were seriously ruining it for me. You may want to bring repel equipment just in case. I’m 5’4 and some areas were pretty sketchy simply because of the length of my legs.
My teens, husband and some awesome new trail friends helped each other up the steep vertical stuff. There are ropes as of 5/24/2020 some looked frayed and almost untrustworthy.
•As of August 2020 the best route is counter-clockwise The hike travels through two slot canyons and is a fun romp for experienced hikers. the road hike adds unnecessary mileage. Once we got through ding we struggled to find the trail that circles back because there is a dirt road that forks right, but the actual trail goes to the left right along the backside of the mountain. Make sure you bring rope to be safe. They weren’t stinky or full of debris just muddy and cold. Those new to canyoneering should always carry a 30-foot rope in this canyon for belays, lowering packs and possible emergency use. Ding Dong, Texas is a seemingly invisible town with a pretty funny story. There were also some rope sections. It was pretty difficult for my seven year old but she did great. It is easy enough to find this trailhead after driving 1.3 miles west of Little Wild Horse and Bell Canyon parking area on a dirt road (Wild Horse Canyon river bed). We loved this canyon but not willing to wade through water. Next time if we didn't have strong helpers we'd bust out the ropes for a few places in Dang. We ended up turning around. Canyoneering Rating: 2A II-III (5.4)
