I'm not sure, but I think this is only her second book. She gave me a scornful look, the visual equivalent of "Duh." Her first, "Die A Little" (which I have not read yet) was nominated for just about every mystery award out there, including the Edgar, the Anthony, and the Barry. Everybody’s high or drunk. She goes to the Guilty Remnant to get away from her present scenario – in her head for a few days – to see what it feels like… and then other things happen. But I'm still always glad Queenpin was the first of her books I read and I love the way it sunk its claws into me in such a secretly scribbled kind of rush.This is one of Megan Abbott's earlier books, when she did straight-up 1940s-1950s Hollywood noir, before she turned to contemporary young adult protagonists. It's unavoidable, it would be like setting a novel in Dublin on June 16th and not expect readers to be thinking Joyce the entire time they are reading your words.
Her prose is impeccable, clean and hard-boiled and thoughtfully crafted. And has he? i don't know about getting down on my knees and begging for mercy, but the book was magnificent. All of which makes for a very interesting, very smart neo-noir.Lovely.
