About Magnificent Desolation. However, due to what I felt was very amateurish writing and poorly handled subject matter I had to give up halfway through. The rest is about Buzz - not so much his life, but him. It is easily one of the most honest and open biographies I have evr read.
Or perhaps you have always played second fiddle in some plum role?
I read through it in just 2 days. The twin demons of depression and alcoholism emerged--the first of which Aldrin confronted early and publicly, and the second of which he met with denial until it nearly killed him. It's simple but profound.
Why?
How do you feel?I'm a big fan of Buzz Aldrin and the space program in general, but I was disappointed by this book.
Buzz Aldrin, Ken Abraham, "Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon" English | 2009 | ISBN: 0307463451 | 336 pages | PDF | 3,3 MB. Actually, I must have downloaded it on the first day of the release.I listened to the audiobook but I didn't realize when I bought it that it was so new, until I saw Buzz on the TV. Magnificent Desolation by Buzz Aldrin; 2 editions; First published in 2009; Subjects: Biography & Autobiography, Nonfiction, Science
As the book depicts, within three years of returning from the moon, Buzz was already far-removed from the proverbial no nonsense, cool-headed image of an astronaut. Just as the old saying goes that you don't want to meet your heroes, he said a lot of his messy business of his personal life that paints him as a real person, but takes away from his mystique as a hero. In the years since, millions more have had their Earth-centric perspective unalterably changed by the iconic photograph of Aldrin standing on the surface of the moon, the blackness of space behind him and his fellow explorer and the Eagle reflected in his visor.
He burned through two marriages, his Air Force career came to an inglorious end, and he found himself selling cars for a living when he wasn't drunkenly wrecking them. The event remains one of mankind’s greatest achievements and was witnessed by the largest worldwide television audience in history. Life seemed to have lost its luster. Aldrin asks where one goes after making it to the moon.
Sometimes, in these kinds of books we are left craving for more, but in this one I found a little bit too much and in some cases it got awfully syrupy and other cases overly self-serving.This was probably my least favorite of the astronaut bio's that I've read so far, primarily because it often dives rather deeply into some tedious details of Aldrin's personal life. Describing the alien world he was walking upon, he uttered the words “magnificent desolation.” And as the astronauts later sat in the Eagle, waiting to begin their journey back home, knowing that they were doomed unless every system and part on board worked flawlessly, it was Aldrin who responded to Mission Control’s clearance to take off with the quip, “Roger. Little could he know, in 1973, that his first autobiography was not the final … It is easily one of the most honest and open biographies I have evr read. His descent into depression and alcoholism and the openness with which he shares what was at the time a taboo subject shows the real character of the man, prepared as he was to defy his very domineering father, who was in denial and would rather have swept these things under the carpet. Or come as a runner-up in a competition when there had to be a tiebreak?
Although I didn’t realize it at the time, I had started drinking more. Forty years ago, Buzz Aldrin became the second human, minutes after Neil Armstrong, to set foot on a celestial body other than the Earth. He has published 40 books,…
