Amidst the crushed emergency vehicles, twisted metal and slabs of concrete is a series of conveyor belts where FBI agents sift the rubble piece by piece before feeding it into a series of industrial grinding machines, turning two skyscrapers, two aeroplanes and the incinerated remains of 1,300 people that were never found into mounds of grey-brown dust.This documentary has clearly been made in a typically American TV documentary style and the solemn, repetitive and rather intrusive incidental music sadly takes away from the emotion of the subject matter rather than adding to it. The stiffly scripted format and droning music prevents the viewer from engaging emotionally with firefighters' stories.On a positive note, although by no means ground-breaking in terms of documentaries, 9/11 the Firefighters' Story is still worth watching for it’s content rather than it’s style and the footage Berriff and Puzziferri shot is a testament to their courage and survival. Though the picture is erractic and confusing as Berriff runs to safely, the sound of millions of tones of concrete crashing to the ground is by far the most disturbing part of the documentary.As well as short interviews with those who lost loved ones who worked for the FDNY, Berriff interviews Firefighter Bob Bacon who recalls with astonishing calmness and clarity how he survived more than one hundred stories of skyscraper crumbling around him as he clung to a beam on the first floor stairwell. But after the atrocity, life for the members of the FDNY returns to the relative mundanity of motorcycle accidents and chip-pan fires.Six weeks after the attack, Berriff returns to New York and the rubble is still red hot in the centre of Ground Zero. 343 New York firefighters died that day.
